In 1602, Bartholomew Gosnold, an English captain, arrived in the area. He named Cape Cod after all the codfish that were there. Other explorers between 1603ΓÇö1609 who came to investigate the region were: Martin Pring, George Waymouth, Samuel de Champlain,
Henry Hudson, and Adriaen Block.
In 1614, Captain John Smith mapped the Massachusetts Bay area naming many of the places there. He described Massachusetts as a paradise in his book, A Description of New England.
